Upper Kirby has seen a dramatic growth in its number of restaurants. It is unlikely that either space will stay empty for long. Houston Press critic Katharine Shilcutt sharply criticized Maggie Rita's in an August review writing that "To say that Maggie Rita's is a disgrace to Tex-Mex would be an understatement." A scouting expedition verified that the Maggie Rita's locations on Post Oak near the Galleria and on Shepherd near Washington are both still open.Įater has reached out both to Moreno and Alto's PR firm for comment but has yet to receive any reply. The restaurant is also listed as closed on b4-u-eat, and the phone rings without any answer or voicemail.įor Maggie Rita's, the closure represents the sad end to a story Eater's been following since July, when owner Santiago Moreno announced he would be transforming three Ninfa's restaurants into the Maggie Rita's concept he co-owns with comedian Carlos Mencia. Alto had already been closed due to the process of building a Del Frisco's Grille in the space previously occupied by its sister restaurant Ava, which closed in June, but a note on the door indicated that the Schiller Del Grande group has decided to make the closure permanent. Excellent food and they know how so treat their guests. After receiving a tip, Eater has learned that both Alto in the West Ave complex at Kirby and Westheimer and the Maggie Rita's (formerly Ninfa's) space at Kirby and Richmond both closed on Friday. If you haven’t tried Eddie V’s yet, you should. The evening turned out to be all that we expected and more. We ordered in prime rib cooked to perfection and Chilean sea bass. We had lobster bisque which was poured table-side, and jumbo shrimp cocktail for an appetizer (beware of the atomic horse radish. The long wait was forgotten and the mess was outstanding. The service was excellent and so was the food. He leaned in and said the manager, who’s name I wish I remembered, was sorry we waited and would like to buy us a round of drinks. A few minutes later our server, Joe, came to the table. ![]() Within in 2 minutes a very tall, extremely courteous young man was there with bread and water. It still put a bit of a damper on the evening. The manager was keeping thing moving masterfully, but we were still waiting.įinally we were seated, but 30 minutes late. It turned out most of the crowd was a large party. I was told they were clearing tables and it would be a few minutes. We got there and managed to get the last parking spot. We had 8:15 reservations on a Friday night. Thank you, to the people of Eddie V's! You are what makes it special. As I told my wife as we left, these people know how to do it right. From the moment we arrived, since they knew what we were celebrating, we were treated regally - from the reception desk, to the maitre d' guiding us to a special booth, to a thoughtful card placed at our table, to Douglas, our server, wishing us "Happy Anniversary" several times throughout the evening and then bringing us a complementary (and decorated) Bananas Foster dessert, to the receptionist remembering our event as we were leaving, and to the valet bringing our car around without being asked - it was incredible. Not only was it professional and attentive it was unbelievably kind and considerate. The ambience and the cuisine (I had the magnificent branzino pictured here) were first rate. It was a wonderful experience, as usual here. Last night, we celebrated our 59th wedding anniversary at this favorite among our nearby restaurants.
